Karma Error: Communication (0) - where did I go wrong?

I've installed drigg (the drigg-distr.tar I found here) on a server where I have MySQL 5.0.27 and php5 - straight out of the box, no problem.

Now equipped with an empty database, I filled it with some old blog-stuff from a wordpress blog via wp_import, and created three users (me, admin, old wordpress blog user). I waded through the configurations of things making sure that tags&topics for 'scoop' were simple enough to understand (not using the mess of topics that the blogpostings had for example as I want to keep them seperate from new driggs) and set karma for voting, etc.

Then I went to test it with a scoop/drigg post. The user who created the post got to 'vote' that one up so it appears - on the front page - with one single vote, but any of the other users simply get Karma Error: Communication (0) whenever they vote on this post. No matter what I change in the karma-settings I never get rid of this error.

Hi, me again! No worries now!

As I suspected the other little quirks had nothing to do with Drigg, so now everything is hunky-dory. :) Sorry again for missing the clean_url neccessity. Thanks for your quick reply, and for drigg!

(on the upside, if someone else does the same thing they'll now find this post and go enable that pronto, right?)

yes!

Hi,

Yes, and no worries! :-D

Merc.

Strange and worrying

Hi,

This is very strange and very worrying.
Have you enabled clean urls?
What server are you using? Is it Apache? (I don't support non-free platforms, sorry)

Please let us know,

merc.

Yep, I haven't enabled clean

Yep, I haven't enabled clean URL's (I plan to but this my sandbox so for stupid redirection reasons in this particular web-folder I can't right now). I am using Apache.

If the non-clean URL's are the likely culprit, I might go ahead and install over at the 'real' server instead as I found no other problems (knock on wood) so far. Then theming will be the only issue left.

The docs...

Hi,

The docs state clearly that Drigg needs clean URLs.

Merc.

OK then. Installed where

OK then.

Installed where clean URL's can be enabled and have no problem with that anymore.

Just tenfold other issues all of a sudden. (users can have their own blogs/ users pictures can't upload) which is probably not drigg related.

Also, on site administration page I see;

warning: Error parsing sites/all/modules/drigg/drigg_approval_queue/drigg_approval_queue.info on line 3 in /home/research/public_html/includes/module.inc on line 195.

Never saw that before but it doesn't seem to be casing the other problems so I'm leaving that for now. It didn't say this where I installed it before.

And sorry for missing the clean URL thing. I'm in a habit of reading the readme's, which only stated:

The documentation about Drigg is _all_ here:

http://www.drigg-code.org

The following site is running the latest bleeding edge:

http://www.drigg.org

so I went flying blind, and missed whereever it said that clean URL's need to be enabled here on the site.

also, the install file that came with the drigg-bundle only said this;

OPTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
---------------------
- If you want support for clean URLs, you'll need mod_rewrite and the ability
to use local .htaccess files.

yaknow, so I thought it was optional. I'm sorry.

ps - by configuring it I

ps - by configuring it I mean I went through this list step by step;

Administer -> Site Configuration -> Extra Voting Forms
Administer -> Site Configuration -> User Karma
Administer -> Site Configuration -> Drigg
Administer -> Site Configuration -> Look of the Drigg module
Administer -> Site Configuration -> Drigg - embedded objects managemen

Each time I changed any karma or voting forms items, I recalculated karma.

I'm logged in as all three users in Safari, Firefox and Flock. Each browser gives the same exact "Karma Error: Communication (0)" when I try and vote with either user.
