Could someone please tell me how to add a background

Could someone please tell me how to add a background behind left and right sidebars and the footer like on www.bananacut.com ? And also I want to add a google ad (468x60) in the region above Published Upcoming etc. ( similar to where www.bananacut.com has "Become a fan of BananaCut on Facebook") could you tell me how to do this (I'm using blocks at present but that moves all the content down )
